Scheduling for the 2013-2014 school year is right around the corner. I wanted to take some time to introduce a course that I think can be very beneficial and challenging for TAG students. The course is Professional Internship. This course allows students to dive into a future career and gain some valuable experience in order to help them plan for their future. Students enroll in the class as a first semester 7th hour course and have the option to extend the class into second semester. During the course students spend the first six to eight weeks in the classroom covering leadership, ethics, critical and creative thinking, and community service. Students will gain experience through career exploration in a business, non-profit, government or academic setting. Students will be released seventh period of the day as part of the 50-hour field experience with their professional mentor. Additional contact hours can be arranged as agreed upon by student, teacher and mentor. A detailed log, portfolio and final project are presented at the completion of the course. I believe this course is a diamond in the rough and during my time at Craig I had the privilege to teach this course. Each and every student who enrolled in this course had a rewarding experience that allowed them to experience their intended future career in order to solidify their future plans.
Students and parents should utilize the online course handbook http://www.janesvilleparker.org/Portals/1/departments/admin/Whole%20book%202013-2014.pdf to start planning out courses for the 2013-2014 school year. Included in the handbook is a four year planning guide. I would suggest utilizing this planning guide to plan out courses for the future. If there are any questions feel free to contact me via email sskemp@janesville.k12.wi.us or by phone 608-743-5585.
Happy Scheduling!
